Gate Charity, a global non-profit philanthropic organization, has partnered with SEAD (Sobat Eksplorasi Anak Dalam), a non-governmental organization focused on the well-being of the Anak Dalam Tribe (also known as SAD), to launch a collaborative “Sustainable Literacy Program”. This joint initiative aims to uplift the Anak Dalam Tribe residing in Hajran Village, Jambi, Sumatra Island, Indonesia, and address their educational challenges. On June 7th, 2023, the Gate Charity team and the SEAD Jambi team paid a visit to Hajran Village to learn more about the situation.

The Anak Dalam Tribe, a nomadic indigenous community spread across the Sumatra region, has been historically marginalized due to their adherence to traditional customs and limited interaction with outsiders. As a result, literacy rates, particularly among children, have remained low. Recognizing the need for sustainable intervention, SEAD initiated a literacy program in 2017, benefiting over 50 SAD children. However, the program faced challenges in sustaining its impact due to the nomadic lifestyle, geographical constraints, and inadequate resources.

The primary objective of Gate Charity’s visit was to observe the current conditions in the village and develop a sustainable literacy program using the “live-in” method. Under this method, teachers will have the opportunity to teach literacy while moving with the Anak Dalam Tribe community, ensuring continuous education despite their nomadic lifestyle.

The literacy program’s main goal is to equip the Anak Dalam Tribe with essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills to protect their customary land rights for future generations. By empowering them with literacy, this collaboration aims to combat forest destruction, fraud, and exploitation faced by the SAD people, who have often been taken advantage of due to their limited literacy.

During the two-day visit, the SEAD and Gate Charity teams engaged in various activities, including interactive learning sessions and exercises with the children to bring them joy. They also had discussions with community leaders to explore more ways to help. In addition, essential supplies such as books, pens, pencils, craft materials, and other learning resources were provided to support the implementation of the program.

Gate Charity and SEAD believe that the successful execution of this collaboration will create a positive and visible social impact on the indigenous community. It is an important step toward empowering the Anak Dalam Tribe and addressing the challenges they face. By joining forces and fostering cross-cultural collaboration, the two organizations hope to create a global initiative to raise awareness and highlight the importance of protecting indigenous communities, not only for their well-being but also for the preservation of the environment.

The involvement of all stakeholders is crucial in safeguarding our planet and creating a sustainable future. Gate Charity will continue to support the Anak Dalam Tribe and indigenous communities in other regions to help build a future that honors indigenous cultures, safeguards their lands, promotes inclusive education, and protects the global environment.
